About

The association Odiana was founded by the municipalities of Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António in December 1998. It is a non-profit association whose main goal is to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural development of the Baixo Guadiana region.

The «Workshops of Traditional Knowledge» project aims, in a dynamic and interactive way, to revitalize and promote some of the Baixo Guadiana traditions, such as Traditional Saltpans.
The aging of the population has led to the disappearance of trades and traditions and it is essential that we can develop actions to minimize this pattern and risk of completely extinguishing local knowledge of the past, which would contribute to the de-characterization of the identity and culture of the Baixo Guadiana region. In this context, we aim to revitalize local traditions and knowledge and to boost the local economy through developing innovative, participatory creative workshops based on learning and “freshening” ancestral traditions and knowledge, and promoting interaction between local craftsmen/artisans and tourists.

Workshop Work the Palm

Odiana has opened pre-registrations for another creative tourism experience in the Lower Guadiana. This time the theme falls on basketwork and weave the palm. The 1st edition of this workshop will allow you to discover the traditional knowledge used for centuries in the making of traditional baskets. In this territory it is still possible to learn from men and women who, with their wise hands, weave baskets of reed and artichokes from the palm of the dwarf palm. “A MORNING WITH THE SHEPHERD!” – Creative Tourism Workshop

Creative Tourism comes back in force to Baixo Guadiana, this time under the theme of the valorization of the goat of the Algarve breed, with the workshop «A Morning with the Shepherd» on October 04. The goal is to learn the art of shepherding with a true shepherd, taking advantage of the beauty and tranquility that the Algarve hills provide. Pre-registrations open until October 2, HERE. Workshop Traditional Saltpans

O workshop de Salinas Tradicionais em Castro Marim inclui uma visita turística às salinas, com direito a recolha artesanal de sal, flor de sal e spa salino. É a oportunidade ideal para descobrir, o saber tradicional usado durante séculos na extração de sal, e por fim, sentir a natureza nas salinas. Conhecer como se produz o sal numa visita turística que oferece a possibilidade de recolher o sal/flor sal artesanalmente. E para concluir esta experiência, o spa salino para relaxar e equilibrar energias: um banho flutuante de sais minerais e aplicação de argila da salina. O workshop decorrerá no dia 14 de Agosto, das 16h às 20h, na Salina da Barquinha em Castro Marim. Importante referir que o limite mínimo de participantes para a realização do workshop é de 4 pessoas e máximo de 8 pessoas. Reunidas estas condições os participantes (por ordem de inscrição) irão receber email de confirmação e NIB para pagamento prévio obrigatório de € 30,00.
