About

The Aldeias do Xisto Network is a regional sustainable development initiative led by ADXTUR, in partnership with 21 Municipalities of the Centro Region and more than 100 private operators. ADXTUR’s mission is to generate territorial attractiveness, stimulating a social and territorial sustainable and integrated development with nature and places.

Aldeias do Xisto aims to reinvent the culture of places with their inhabitants to create social and economic value in these territories. We invoke the memory of solidary of the rural and genuine community spirit to dare to do and experiment differently, based on our resources and opening the door to new thoughts and settlers.

Finding opportunities to face the vicious cycle of economic and social decline that most rural areas are facing today requires a renewed look at problems, exploring less traveled paths. Aldeias do Xisto has been building a living laboratory, inviting residents in these territories to create and experiment, and to create centres of transformation in the social fabric that are capable of germinating new ways of doing and being.

Chawan and Raku Cup Workshop – 2nd Edition

Center

We started from the ancestral technique of the ball to make a set of Chawan tea cups (Japanese cups) followed by thinning with a rudimentary wooden tool to give them their shape.   Looking for the relationship between the object and the hand, we explore the balance of form and dimension in a rhythmic cadence of time like a pulse. We propose the construction of a memory about knowing how to do, the expression that each one can transmit to matter, each moment of contemplation, the reunion with oneself in a cup of tea.   The highlight of this workshop is always the Raku firing! We will decorate our set of cups of tea with glazes and ceramic dyes and then submit them to the action of fire in the Raku kiln, for about 30 minutes. We can enjoy the incandescent pieces when they come out of the kiln and we are surprised by the effects produced by this process.

Wood Sculpture Course

Center

... with Kerstin Thomas & Renato Costa e Silva   In this course you can learn to handle hand tools like bundle and chisels to make your sculpture. We also introduce you to the work with chainsaw and power tools, we propose a diversity in carving techniques to give form to your final work. Working with wood is a continuous dialogue with the material, respecting its unique characteristics to achieve the result we wish. In order to her vision of resource sustainability, Kerstin prefers to work with wood from fallen trees or left overs from the sawmill.   Each participant will design, with our support, their own project, plan and choose raw material and the appropriate tool at each step of the process. If you have your own project in mind, please contact us in advance so we can better support your plans.

Ceramic Sculpture and Wood Firing Course

Center

... from September 27 to October 5, with Renato Costa e Silva & Kerstin Thomas Renato Costa e Silva is a researcher and storyteller, his sculpture tells us about it. If on the one hand they are the result of a methodical process of conception that goes through drawings and models, the preparation of the raw material until the most exact execution, preserves and cultivates, on the other hand, a spontaneity in the process of modeling and a willingness to experiment that culminates in the delivery of the pieces to the action of fire. Carried out in prepared and optimized folders for each new work, the pieces in stoneware or porcelain approach his vision of the world, and let emerge a deep understanding of the human being, full of humor and affection.   Together with Kerstin Thomas, he will support each student to progress and take home objects and small sculptures that reflect not only the learning done but also the personal expression of each one.

Ceramics and Nature Course – Lidia Bosevski

Center

A five-way approach to ceramics.   Observing and following our impulses, attracted by the most incredible details that nature offers us, awakens our creativity, our natural sense of harmony and aesthetics. Free of prejudices and expectations, we create our pieces being an integral part of nature. When walking through the mountains we seek not only inspiration, but also textures, tools and materials. Back to the studio we will investigate and test to select the raw material for the objects we want to create. In this course we will learn to look further to know the characteristics of our raw materials, nature and in all the ceramic process until the firing.   Participants have the opportunity to create their own collection of ceramic objects inspired by learning and the days of immersion in nature.
